2022 was another successful year for ICT market opportunities produced by the Team Finland network. 127 market opportunities identified opportunities for 500 Finnish companies. Our Senior Advisor Perry Le Dain walks us through what are the five global markets where demand for Finnish digital expertise is high and why Finland’s expertise will ensure global competitiveness.

Demand globally for Finnish technologies remains strong in 2023. This includes traditional technologies such as communication and networks, enterprise and business software, retail tech, data analytics, cybersecurity, defence, eGovernment and fintech, to highlight some examples. The need for emerging technologies such as mixed reality, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, big data, advanced manufacturing/robotics, and electric vehicles is growing rapidly.

Many market opportunities identified by Business Finland in recent years have been related to smart cities and digital transformation. We continue to keep a close eye on opportunities that require Finnish talent and innovation. This is core to our service offering.

We have identified five markets where demand for Finnish digital expertise is high:
  1. United States (predominantly games, media, mixed reality, enterprise software)
  2. Brazil (predominantly communications, networks, defence)
  3. India (predominantly communications, networks, data analytics, AI)
  4. Germany (predominantly data analytics, AI, enterprise software)
  5. China (predominantly automotive)

According to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2022, Finland has the most advanced digital economy in the EU. 

Finland ranks so highly due to its vast expertise in all areas related to the in the DESI Index – all of which are exportable to global markets.

Finland's expertise in digital transformation will ensure global competitiveness

Data-driven digital services enable a smoothly working society of digitally empowered citizens. Finland’s high ranking in DESI 2022 positions it very well to provide the necessary resources to assist global markets with the digital transformation of business, government, and society.

The implementation of digitally optimized services and processes will drive sustainability, eliminate errors, ensure business continuity and quality. This includes the generation, delivery, collection, storage, processing, distribution, analysis of data enabled by digital technologies.  The data economy is increasingly based on collaborative data sharing in the value network.

The EU Recovery and Resilience Facility is a key driver for Finland’s expertise in digital transformation. This is a focus area for Business Finland to enable growth funding for Finnish technology companies. Under the EU RRF, member states must dedicate at least 20% of their RRF plan’s total allocation to digital transition or to addressing the challenges resulting from it. EUR 127 billion is allocated for digital transformation.

2023 will be a promising year for Finland’s ICT industry

The world has changed substantially since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and it is very clear that the ICT industry will continue to be a major engine for human and economic development.
