The Team Finland network is organizing a high-level business delegation visit to Japan from December 9-12/13, 2024, led by Mr. Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister of Finland.
Finland and Japan share a strong partnership across multiple sectors, and this visit presents a prime opportunity to showcase Finland's innovative strengths to Japanese industries focused on sustainable development and digital transformation.
The visit’s key themes are digitalization, particularly in the semiconductor industry, and sustainability. The program in Tokyo will feature B2B meetings with Japanese companies, industry roundtable discussions, and a networking reception. Additionally, the digitalization-focused group will participate in SemiCon Japan.
According to Japan's GX Basic Policy (February 2023), "Digital Investment for Decarbonization Purposes" is projected to reach 12 trillion yen (approximately 75 billion euros) over the next decade, with next-generation semiconductor development at the forefront.
Japan’s strategy includes rebuilding its semiconductor industry by boosting domestic production of general-purpose semiconductors, followed by the mass production of highly integrated next-generation semiconductors. Furthermore, the country aims to develop and implement Photonics-Electronics Convergence Technology, expected to lead the future semiconductor market with superior signal processing and energy efficiency.
As the pace of semiconductor process integration slows, Japan is also focusing on enhancing its competitiveness by leveraging advanced packaging technology, particularly through chiplet integration.
For Finnish companies offering technologies aligned with Japan’s strategic objectives, strong demand is anticipated.
Sustainability is another key focus in Japan’s policy and business landscape. Japan has adopted the circular economy as a national strategy and, in August 2024, introduced a new Fundamental Plan for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society. This plan, which emphasizes recycling, waste management, and international resource circulation, opens significant opportunities for Finnish and global companies that can provide technologies and materials supporting zero-carbon initiatives.
The visit is aimed for Finnish companies that offer solutions for;
